Remixing the look and feel of a cultural staple

Nolte worked alongside the Mass Appeal leadership, editorial, and strategy team to breathe new life into the Mass Appeal website.


Mass Appeal is a New York-based media and content company whose mission is to be the premier platform for leaders in urban culture. Since its inception in 1996, the brand has been living, breathing and definitively documenting youth-born culture worldwide. The Mass Appeal team was looking to refresh their site and drive attention to social media efforts alongside overall brand recognition.

The Challenge

Nolte began supporting the site under Nolte Care in 2015. Nolte Care remained a robust solution for the Mass Appeal team as it allowed the resourcefulness of an in-house team without the large expense. In q1 of 2017 the initiative from the Mass Appeal editorial team was to promote their social channels as well as the brand as a whole. The Journey

Due to upcoming news being released around major investment into the company, it was important that our team was able to execute on the strategy, design and development within a 2-3 week period. We worked alongside their team to come up with a fresh solution tailored to their overall goals. Our team worked swiftly to develop concepts within days and then develop, stage and perform quality assurance shortly after. The end solution was delivered seamlessly within a total of 2.5 weeks.

Discovery & Strategy

Being that our team had been maintaining the site for some years, the technical details all remained under our control which allowed for shorter ramp and delivery times. Our initial strategy for the project was short and sweet, as the Mass Appeal team had a clear direction. Our team was able to deliver initial concepts that exceeded expectations.

The Solution

Our solution presented clearer information architecture including fixes to problematic navigation areas as well as overall content flows site-wide. Our team also brought light to some problematic user experience areas which we provided some simple design and development fixes for. To improve the overall user experience, subtle animation and interaction elements were introduced to assist in driving engagement with content.

The Implementation

Our initial concepts were presented as a clickable prototype to show the overall look, feel and experience of the site before moving into development. Nolte leveraged WordPress best practices to implement the design changes. Our team ran weekly sprints and quality assurance cycles post-sprint to test all areas of development.


Font Metropolis was used throughout the whole site, making clean appearence with it’s simple and geometrical shape. Since there is a lot of information shown on the layout, with different styles used from Metropolis font family it was easy to achieve contrast in type treatment while keeping the layout clean and easy for the user to focus on the content and images.
